Given the record company's unwillingness to release this material, one might expect it to be wholly uncommercial, but in fact on has hid some of his best and most accessible pop gems ever. Included in this is the uptempo anthem 'Ride With Duce,' the pure pop of 'Shake a Little Nervous,' and the galloping 'Take Me Silver.' Granted, could most easily be compared to 1983's politically-charged, and somewhat experimental, and it does include some decidedly experimental material (especially the nine-minute 'Race To Nowhere,' and 'Wait For Fate'). While there is a seven track overlap with, the other eight tracks are exclusive to this rare album and are certainly worth seeking out for any or Cars fan.

However, in North America, Reprise Records declined to release the CD in Ocasek's original form. Instead, the company took 7 tracks from Ocasek's project, and had him record 7 additional tracks with producer. The resulting record was issued as in North America only. For European release, Negative Theater was issued as a 15-track CD. It included 7 tracks that were issued on Quick Change World, and 8 tracks that are exclusive to this album.
