Check Serial Number On Dooney And Bourke
EBay If Your Bag Is New and Purchased from the Store First things first: To really understand what a true designer bag is, you need to know what it would have if you were buy it new and true from the store, or a supplier store (Nordstrom, Saks Fifth Avenue, Barneys, etc.) What to expect when buying a new Dooney & Bourke bag: 1.) Inside your bag there will be a sitcker on a pocket with what's called 'the style number.' That style number will match the warranty card located on the bottom portion of your official Dooney & Bourke card.
2.) Inside your bag there will be a blue, white and red tag sewn into the seam that states 'DOONEY AND BOURKE.' On the reverse side of this tag there will be a sequence of random letters and numbers. 3.) On the tag of your new Dooney & Bourke bag (the tag that you would remove from the bag after purchase, since it's not really 'part of the bag') there will be a description of the bag and it will also have the style number that you find on the sticker on the pocket of your bag and the warranty card.
Convinced that a Dooney & Bourke bag is for you? Here are a few ways to learn which ones are best for you, or to shop all things Dooney! Poshmark A New Dooney Should Have a Guarantee Card According to the Dooney & Bourke website, every authentic Dooney purchase comes with a 'guarantee card.' The company backs every authentic Dooney bag with what they call their 'ironclad Dooney Guarantee.'
They offer an unconditional guarantee for a full year of normal use. However, in order to be covered by the product guarantee, you must register your Dooney with the information on the guarantee card that comes with each product.
You can find the online registration portal on the brand's website. If the Dooney product has surpassed its year of purchase, you cannot ask Dooney to cover it in the event of normal use damage.
However, a reseller should include the guarantee card so that you, the consumer, know that you are in fact buying an authentic Dooney & Bourke bag. EBay If Your Bag is Vintage with the Leather Duck Oval If you want to know whether your Dooney & Bourke bag is in fact authentic vintage, check the Dooney & Bourke oval duck logo sewn onto the front. If it is only glued, and not in fact sewn, you are probably looking at a fake bag. Now, to explain the duck logo itself!
It's speculated that since the company was founded in New England, the 'duck' represents the heritage and origin of the brand. But, this is not true! The was invented in 1983 to help the consumer have a bag that could be gently cleaned with a damp washcloth, and without worry that it would get wet and damaged. The AWL is made with cowhide leather and quickly became a bestseller. Because ducks are also all-weather creatures (they can dive into water and essentially come out 'not wet,' as the water quickly flicks off their feathers) founders Dooney and Bourke chose the duck to represent the quality and craftsmanship of this waterproof bag.
EBay Examine the Labels Inside As described above, an authentic Dooney bag (whether vintage or new) will have a red, white and blue tag sewn into the interior of the bag with the serial number on the back of the tag. This serial number will match the serial number on the price / brand tag of a new Dooney bag. If the Dooney is vintage, it will have a green tag. Sometimes tags are ripped out of Dooney & Bourke bags. If you notice red, white and blue threads where the tag used to be, you are probably looking at an. This is up to your discretion, however. Hint: Considering production has predominantly moved overseas, some newer Dooney bags have tags which say 'Made in China.'
Do not be alarmed, but be sure to educate yourself via the Dooney & Bourke website so that you can know if the style of the bag you are looking at was actually produced by Dooney. EBay Examine the Embossing and Hardware Dooney & Bourke is not afraid to show off its name! Most Dooney bags are designed to have Dooney & Bourke written somewhere on the bag. Leather bags often have the name embossed onto the hardware (which is a brass/gold color) or embossed directly onto the leather.
This embossing has no 'mistakes' and is tight stitching. If you see anything that looks suspicious with the embossing, it is probably a fake. On newer bags, the signature is hung as an ornamental charm (or called 'FOB' by industry terms) and on even newer bags, the ornament is a heart. A fake 'meant-to-be-new' Dooney & Bourke bag may not have the signature Dooney ornament. EBay Examine the Craftsmanship The reason a Dooney & Bourke bag costs hundreds of dollars new is because it is well designed with near perfect stitching, piping, fabric, real leather and a clean interior.
The zipper's color will match the rest of the bag and not look out of place. The zipper will easily move back and forth without catching or seeming slow.
If you spot a Dooney outside of its normal supplier (that means a department store or another high-end goods store), do the simple but effective 'scratch' test or also called the 'fingernail test.' If the scratches with your fingernail, it's probably real. If it doesn't, it's probably pleather.
Also, run your hands over the leather if you know what real leather versus fake leather feels like. You may have to educate yourself on this first by comparing. Don't Mistake a New Dooney for a Vintage One. EBay Don't be fooled by a reseller claiming a new Dooney & Bourke purse is a vintage one!
Some resellers think that labeling an item 'vintage' when it really isn't will make the item more attractive to the buyer. Being a vintage lover myself, I never really understood that until I realized how some innocent shoppers genuinely find the word 'vintage' appealing and will buy something that definitely is not vintage simply because they are misguided and uneducated. The bags shown above are not vintage Dooney & Bourke bags. By definition, a vintage item is 20 years or older.
These bags carry the newer designs of Dooney, including a more colorful base to the bag, a heart ornament hung from the zipper, and when a newer leather piece, plain and minimalist design. A vintage Dooney bag has granular real cowhide leather. A newer Dooney bag may be made from real leather but is smooth and almost 'too perfect' looking to be vintage. It takes years as a vintage lover to have that sixth sense for vintage, but handling a vintage Dooney & Bourke bag will always feel different than a newer bag. It just takes practice to figure out how which actually feels.

Dooney did bring them back recently trying to capture that look with their latest fashions though. They are not exactly like the first DB fobs but close to it.
If you watch their styles you'll see they take ideas from the past trying to bring them into the styles now to compliment various age ranges. SOME Dooney items are have been made in Mexico.
PLEASE make sure that if you purchase one of the purses 'made in Mexico' you purchase it from a high end store of QVC. Because the border towns sell fake Dooney purses like hotcakes.!!! NEW ALERT ADDED!!! I recently went to a flea market and looked at their 'Dooney' items. I looked at items that had the DBs on it. The ones from their signature and anniversary lines. They had the Red, White, and Blue Dooney tag inside.
When I asked the sales rep stated these WERE NOT AUTHENTIC Dooney items!!! They had also the Red and White Dooney sales tag on the outside along with the leather Dooney and Bourke on the inside. Now, having handled the purses I can honestly tell you I COULD NOT TELL THE DIFFERENCE because all of the markings were there that should have been there.
I was simply SHOCKED!!! Please be careful, ask ALL QUESTIONS before bidding. If the Seller states, 'As far as I know it's authentic.' I would bid on a different item. Because there are SO MANY spot on fakes out there I can NO LONGER tell from just photos if the item is authentic or not - I apologize that I'm unable to help. For many years as so many of you know I've been able to assist you from just a photo - sadly that is no longer the case. Some of the newer purses do not have these, and most of the vintage purses do not have these but usually they do have the old green Dooney tags or at least the old DB Fob. The DB Fob is different from the Duck All Weather Leather Fob. Don't be afraid to ask the seller a question, that's why there are there. The AWL line has this on their checkbooks and some wallets. Are there any pen marks, stains inside or outside of the purse? You might be surprised at the answers you get, remember your question is not stupid and it's your job to make sure you get what you pay for.
Are there any odors? Does it come from a smoke free home? No offense to any of the smokers out there, but the odor that lingers in the leather and fabric purses can be just awful. Make sure that you ask these questions.
One of my first purchases on eBay the purse came from a smoker's house and I had to give it away because the odor was simply too much for me to take. I had no idea I would even have to ask that question. We live and learn. (See helpful hint #20) 5.
How is the leather trim or piping along the edges? Most Dooney purses last forever and with special care they can always look 'almost new' or in 'mint condition'. Be sure to ask the seller for additional pictures of the corners of the purse, the bottom, and the sides to make sure the leather is not running thin due to abuse of the item. Dooney and Bourke Signature line.notice the tight stitching, the quality of the leather. This is how the stitiching should be. Below are some more examples of how stitching and the piping (the rounded leather around the edges of the bag) should be. Is the Dooney brass FOB still there?
The FOB is the little extra touch Dooney uses on its purses. On the older purses it's the old DB. The 'newer' Dooney uses the Duck and the All Weather Leather. Dooney in its more trendier line uses the heart and will continue to come up with new ideas as time goes on. OLDER DOONEY BRASS FOB New Nickle FOB the front has a colored Duck, colors vary Front of Purse, New Nickle logo replaced Dooney Duck Front image of Dooney FOB with light baby blue duck 7. Are there any holes? It's good to always ask, you might be surprised at what some people put on here.
Are there any cracks or tears on the leather or the plastic ID Holder or the Credit Card holder areas? I know it seems like a common sense thing that would be listed, but again it's better to ask then to be disappointed in what you receive. Do the fingernail test. Yes, the fingernail test. (I know your laughing at me or at least smiling but it works.) Run your fingertips over a real leather AWL Dooney item, then go to your local thrift shop or whenever you're at an estate sale and run your fingertips over a fake leather purse.
You'll be able to tell the difference quickly, the sound gives it away. It's shocking, but it's a tried and true way of seeing quickly what's authentic and what isn't without being overly obvious about it. Pictures, Pictures, Pictures!!! If you see something you really want, always ask for detailed close up pictures of the areas you want to see. Remember, this is your money, your investment.
If the Seller is confident in their item, they know they are selling a nice product they will give you as many pictures as you request. If they have a happy buyer, they know you might come back and purchase again from them. Don't give into the excitement of a ' Buy It Now' auction.
I've done this myself. I see something I've wanted for awhile, I see the Buy It Now, and 'BAM' I go to get it before taking my own advice because I'm afraid someone else is going to get it before me. Ask ALL questions before bidding, take your time, sooner or later another item just like that and perhaps even better will come up.
Ask the Seller to send your Dooney purchase in a BOX! Please ask them to send your item in a box, not in a thick paper package or plain brown shopping bag paper wrapping. They can get the boxes FREE if they send your item Priority so it doesn't cost them any money. They can even receive the shipping priority tape free if they ask nicely or have the Postal Clerk tape it up for them with the Priority tape.
This hasn't been a problem for me until recently. Perhaps they are trying to save on shipping fees?
I'm unsure, but ask them to ship it in a box before bidding. You don't want your Dooney to become damaged in shipment and then have the hassle of filing your insurance claim and trying to receive a refund. Ask for Delivery Confirmation!
I love Delivery Confirmation. The USPS allows you to track your item and you know when it arrives at your home.
If your Seller uses their Paypal to print the shipping labels, the USPS offers FREE Delivery Confirmation if they also use Priority Mail Services. Are there any cigarette burn marks? I know this should be covered under ' smoke odors or holes' but again, there are wording loop holes out there let's keep ourselves safe.
A burn mark isn't considered a hole unless it goes all the way through. Be sure to ask.
Keep yourself safe. Helpful Hint: Number your questions when you are asking your eBay seller your questions and send a copy to your email.
When they reply you're able to check each one of them off. If they forget to answer one, don't be afraid to resend the question. Remember, that's why the Seller is there, to answer all of the questions that you have.
Helpful Hint: Use eBay's 'Live Chat'. The people that I've dealt with on the Live Chat have always been wonderful and pointed me in the right direction when I thought I was lost. The longest I've waited for someone was about 7 minutes, and that's not bad! Helpful Hint: If you feel you have been taken advantage of or the Seller did not represent the item correctly please contact the Seller first before leaving feedback and try to work things out.
If you're unable to work things out, contact eBay's Square Trade or contact the Live Chat and they will point you in the direction you need to go in. EBay also now offers 'eBay Buyer Protection' which is wonderful because YOU are protected. Helpful Hint: Many thanks to another eBay Member for pointing this out to me! On some of Dooney's newer lines, they will have a 'Made in China' tag in them.
Please educate yourself on the newer lines Dooney is coming out with to make sure you're getting the real deal. If you are unsure if an item you purchased is authentic Dooney will inspect your item.
Please call them directly for more information. If you don't want to ship it to them, you can also ask one of the sales girls that sell Dooney items.
If they have worked with the line long enough they will be able to spot a fake from the real deal. If you purchased a purse that has smoke odor, buy a high quality cat litter place the purse and litter inside of a sealed plastic bag. Let it sit for about two weeks or so.
The cat litter takes out most of the smoke odor. As countless others know I will answer your emails and do the very best I can to help you out! If for some reason I'm unable to answer via email I'll post your answer here.
